Pensions Threaten Dividend Payout

Tuesday, July 5th, 2005

British Airways will likely again declare zero dividends in order to cover its huge pension deficit:

BA last paid a dividend in 2000. Since then it has struggled with the aftermath of 11 September, Sars and the war in Iraq. The airline is not likely to make its final decision on paying a dividend for this financial year until next May. But the twin impact of the pensions black hole and the volatile price of oil mean the chances of a dividend being paid will dwindle to almost nothing despite the airline successfully bringing its debt down.
